15 Essential Questions to Ask Your Wedding Videographer Before Booking

February 12, 202612 min readAnother Dream Production Team

Booking a wedding videographer can feel overwhelming. There are so many options, so many different styles, and so many packages that it's hard to know what you're actually comparing. A lot of couples end up choosing based on price or a flashy Instagram reel without asking the questions that actually matter.

The right questions don't just help you avoid a bad experience — they help you find a team that truly fits your vision and gives you a film you'll love for the rest of your life.

Here are the questions we think every couple should ask before signing a contract, and why each one matters.

"Can I See a Full Wedding Film, Not Just a Highlight Reel?"

This is the single most important thing you can ask. Highlight reels are designed to impress — they're the best three minutes from an eight-hour day, set to a trending song with perfect pacing. Every videographer's highlight reel looks good.

The full film is where you see the real skill. How does the videographer handle an entire ceremony? Do the speeches hold your attention, or does the editing feel flat? Is there a narrative thread connecting the day, or does it just move from one event to the next?

When we share our full films with potential couples, we're proud of every minute. The pacing holds. The audio is clean and emotional. The story builds from beginning to end. That's the standard you should be looking for.

"How Many Videographers Will Be at My Wedding?"

This matters more than most couples realize. A single videographer can only be in one place at a time. That means during the ceremony, they're either getting your reaction or your partner's — not both. During the getting-ready process, they're with one side of the wedding party, missing the other entirely.

A two-person video team can cover both angles simultaneously. One videographer captures your face as you read your vows while the other captures your partner's tears. One is with the bride during getting ready while the other is with the groom. The result is a film that feels complete — no missing perspectives, no gaps in the story.

At Another Dream Production, our packages include multi-person coverage because we believe your wedding film should capture the full picture, not just half of it.

"What Equipment Do You Use for Audio?"

If a videographer doesn't have a clear, confident answer to this question, that's a red flag. Audio is what separates a video you watch once from a film that makes you cry every time. And professional audio requires dedicated equipment.

You want to hear that they use wireless lavalier microphones on the officiant (and ideally on both partners), as well as a dedicated audio recorder for the toasts and speeches. Relying on a camera-mounted microphone from the back of the venue will give you distant, echoey audio that ruins even the most beautiful footage.

We invest heavily in audio equipment because we know it's the backbone of every great wedding film. When you hear your vows played back with crystal clarity, you'll understand why.

"What's Your Editing Style and Turnaround Time?"

Every videographer has a distinct editing style — cinematic, documentary, editorial, trendy, timeless. Make sure theirs aligns with what you want. Ask to see examples from different weddings to see how consistent their style is.

Turnaround time matters too. Some videographers deliver in four to six weeks. Others take six months or longer. There's nothing wrong with a longer turnaround if the quality justifies it, but you should know the timeline upfront so you're not anxiously waiting with no idea when your film will arrive.

We give our couples a clear delivery timeline at booking, and we stick to it. We also deliver a teaser or sneak peek within the first two weeks so you have something to share and enjoy while we work on the full film.

"What's Included in Your Package — and What Costs Extra?"

This is where a lot of couples get surprised after booking. Some videographers quote a base price that sounds reasonable, then charge extra for things you assumed were included: raw footage, a second shooter, drone coverage, audio recording equipment, extended hours, or additional edits.

Ask for a detailed breakdown of exactly what's included. Things to clarify:

  • How many hours of coverage are included?
  • How many videographers are on-site?
  • Is a highlight reel included?
  • What about a full ceremony edit? Full reception edit?
  • Are speeches and toasts captured in full?
  • Is drone or aerial footage included?
  • Will you receive any raw footage?
  • How many rounds of revisions are included on the final edit?
  • Is travel included or billed separately?

Our packages at Another Dream Production are designed to be comprehensive and transparent. We don't believe in hidden fees or surprise add-ons. When we quote a price, that's the price — and it includes everything you need for a complete wedding film. We offer photography-only, videography-only, and combined photo + video packages so you can choose exactly what fits your needs and budget.

"Have You Worked at My Venue Before?"

A videographer who knows your venue has a significant advantage. They know where the best light is at different times of day, where to position cameras during the ceremony for the best angles, which areas of the reception have good acoustics, and where to go for those golden hour couple shots.

If they haven't worked at your venue, that's not a dealbreaker — but ask how they prepare. Do they do a venue walkthrough before the wedding? Do they review the layout and lighting conditions? Do they coordinate with the venue's event team?

We've filmed at venues across Southern California and beyond, and when we haven't been to a specific location before, we always do our research in advance. We'll visit the venue when possible, study the layout, and coordinate with your other vendors to make sure we're fully prepared.

"How Do You Work with the Photographer?"

If you're booking a separate photographer and videographer, this question is essential. Photo and video teams need to work together seamlessly — sharing access to key moments, not blocking each other's shots, and coordinating on timeline and positioning.

If your photo and video teams don't communicate well, you end up with a videographer standing in the background of your portraits, or a photographer's flash disrupting the ceremony footage.

This is actually one of the biggest advantages of booking a team that does both photography and videography under one roof. At Another Dream Production, our photo and video teams are already in sync. They plan together, position together, and know each other's shooting style. There's no competing for angles or miscommunication — just seamless coverage from every perspective.

"What Happens If You Can't Make It to My Wedding?"

Life happens. Illness, emergencies, unforeseen circumstances. Ask your videographer what their backup plan is. Do they have a second shooter who can step in? Do they have a network of trusted colleagues they can call? Is there a clause in the contract that addresses this?

A solo videographer with no backup plan is a risk. A team with built-in redundancy gives you peace of mind. Our team of four to six means there's always coverage, always a backup, and always someone ready to step in if the unexpected happens.

The Right Questions Lead to the Right Team

Asking these questions isn't about being difficult — it's about making sure you invest in a team that's truly going to deliver the wedding film you deserve. The right videographer will welcome these questions because they're proud of their answers.

And if you're looking for a team that checks every one of these boxes — professional audio, multi-person coverage, transparent pricing, combined photo and video expertise, and a storytelling approach that creates films worth watching on repeat — we'd love to hear from you.
